Question: Did anyone here HATE or RESENT wearing braces when you had them (maybe when you were a kid or teen), but now you look back on the braces experience and enjoy or are aroused by the memory?  Was it more enjoyable or arousing since you first hated it??  Did being MADE to have them, and hating them make the arousal or enjoyment you now have for it more intense???

I had braces as a teen. At first I was embarrassed by them, and resented being made to wear them, but that feeling abated pretty quickly. After a month or so, they just didn't matter to me at all one way or the other. Looking back on the experience with 30 years of hindsight, I can't say it affects me at all in terms of enjoying braces on women.

I regret not wearing my headgear more, I avoided it at every possible moment.

When I was young I had to wear Headgear(RPHG) and a pallet expander and despised every moment of it and would try to escape from having to wear it.

Now I wish I had to have a heavy treatment in which headgear had to be wired in lol

It's weird how things like this happen lol

I had removable braces in my teens, didn't mind the first one just a plate with wires behind my front teeth pushing them forward apart from a lisp it was unnoticeable.I resented the next two I had, they both had two wires over the front teeth pushing my lips forward and the plate was larger causing a permanent lisp, strangely enough I use to get aroused wearing them.that feeling has never gone away,it's much stronger now. There may be something in being made to wear them against your will that makes the arousal and enjoyment more intense.I would certainly have hated being made to wear headgear.I could not think of anything worse or more embarrassing than that at school.

.  It was fifty years ago this spring it all went on, I was 13.   I didn't want them in the first place then they told me about the headgear. I wore that thing full time that summer, not by choice.  It really did give you space at the front of the geek line.  Spent all of high school (all three of them) known as the new guy with the braces.  Still had them on for my first year of college.  We moved twice after they went on so not only a new orthodontist, but new classmates.  Five years later ortho number three still wanted more time.  It was a joke in my family how much I hated them then and it remains a joke until this day.  The arguments between my mother and I over wearing that headgear are still legendary.

I took a writing class about 14 years ago and an assignment was something from childhood that others would remember me for.  There was no doubt it was my orthodontic saga (that is how I found this forum).   Turned out that was very thereputic, now I think it was pretty funny.  I hated them.

I didn't have braces when I was younger while all of my friends had them in middle school and high school. I was a little envious as I didn't smile very much because I needed them and was intrigued by them. I got braces when I was 22. I started with a Jones Jig Appliance and Nance appliance and then went in full top and bottom ceramic braces. My treatment lasted 4 years! I now have an upper essix retainer and lower hawley retainer. I always wished I had gotten braces when I was younger and had some appliances as part of my treatment.

I hated my braces so much. When I knew I was getting braces i just hoped that it would be fixed braces like the other kids in my class. But first i got a fixed expander which not only gave me a pretty terrible lisp but also created this huge gap between my front teeth. It made speaking and eating really hard and the fact that i couldn't hide it made me so embarassed.
Then i finally got the fixed braces to close the gaps and i was glad that i got rid of the lisp when - bam - headgear. Fortunately only had to wear it at night, but i was so embarassed in front of my family and was afraid my friends would find out and laugh about me. Of course i never wore it long enough and my orthodontist threatened that he would have to give me a fixed appliance to do the job which would be far more uncomfortable than the headgear (i'm guessing he meant the herbst appliance?). I somehow managed to wear it long enough and finish the treatment. But i was afraid of every appointment, already expecting the next humiliating appliance to make my life miserable. Oddly enough i find thinking about that kind of arousing nowadays... :D

I completely understand what you mean by this!^
It's like you are fearing the unexpected appliance that is going to ruin your social life, make eating and talking impossible and or something that cannot be hidden and draws attention. Totally understand

I had braces when I was younger. I never really had a thing for braces but definitely did for appliances, both fixed and removable. Braces embarrassed me a bit because they were always there, but I was always super jealous of my friends who got expanders or other appliances. I wonder if it's a grass greener thing, I'm sure if I actually had them I would not have liked it, but the idea of it still arouses me! Nowadays, I would love very invasive treatments, just as a few of you mentioned.

I got a hawley retainer at the end of treatment, and I wore it a lot, even though my parents didn't make me (and my mom tried actively to have me avoid wearing it in public!) The few times I wore it to school were definitely very exciting to me.

I just wish someone had suggested that I needed braces when I was at school.
I would have benefitted from them because there were gaps in my front teeth and they were slightly forward.
I remember each of my friends who had braces and wished I could work up the courage to ask my parents or dentist about having them. Somehow I thought they might guess that I had an interest in braces and confront me about it. I think I assumed that no one else could actually want to wear them!
At that time a "brace" usually seemed to mean a Hawley retainer, and that's what I wanted.  I was only ever aware of one school friend with any sort of fixed braces. That person had wildly irregular teeth and various wires attached.
Somehow that was of no particular interest at all.

So....I don't think I would have hated having them.

I never had them before. Wanting braces would have been like asking to go to a psychiatrist. Although come to think of it, I probably needed both. I just got neither and here I am with you, my compatriots.
