It seems that Catherine Aimes, at IntraOral Press, did a survey of the readers of her braces-related stories, to find out what they like / didn't like... it's interesting reading. You'll find it over at https://dereferer.me/?https://dereferer.me/?http://www.intraoralpress.com/drwright/Survey_1.htm

Its an interesting discussion, whether the stories should be "hidden" in the "members area", or should be visible. Personally, I've had access to the members area for so long, that I don't think about the issues, until someone (like this thread) comments.

So, here is a question directly to Marty: why DO you feel that stories must be hidden in the members area, and not, say, here, more visibly?

I see no LEGAL reason that this should be the case, so why? As a story writer, why can't I have the choice as to whether my story is in the "restricted area" or in a "public area"? (I should add that I'm NOT including any form of "adult fiction" in this discussion: that, for good reasons, needs to be in an age-restricted area)

I 100% appreciate that BracesForum.net site belongs to Marty, and thus it is ultimately his choice as to what happens, but at the end of the day, the forum really only continues to exist in the way it does because of all the readers and contributors... so I would have thought that those people should be allowed to "influence" the way things happen.

Just my personal thoughts. It would be interesting to hear what some of the other "old timers" feel.

Marty: this is NOT any form of personal attack, I'm just trying to understand "where you are coming from".

As someone who has spent a long time collecting and looking for stories, I was thrilled to find this forum. It was a bit frustrating to have to wait to get into the stories section, but having to contribute to the forum allowed or forced me (depending on how you look at it) to help make this a better place. I don't write stories, but I do read them and try to correct spelling and formatting errors. Since I have started The Archive and have been commenting about the errors I have found, I have seen an improvement in the way the writers have been editing their work. I feel that having a place to store the work they have done is also of benefit to everyone here.

I have been providing stories to the people who have taken the time to contribute to this group. There are several people who have contributed stories to my collection, because their stories don't meet the rules for posting to the forum. I very much agree that there have to be rules for this forum, and that the owner is the one to set those rules. Some of my posts have been deleted when they are not in line with the rules, which is something I respect.

So far, the people who are complaining are the people who haven't added anything to this forum yet. If they won't help build a better forum, they don't really need to be here. No one is forcing them to be here. Look at how many members are in this group, and then look at how many are actually contributing.

I do understand what you’re saying but we are fundamentally different people. Forums like this one, or any other, all work on the same principle - a minority of content contributors and a majority of content appreciators. If you look at the stats for a site like Reddit, you can immediately see that it is a minority of users that even have an account, let alone those who actuallly create or share content. But this kind of division makes sense - there are millions of people who don’t feel comfortable speaking up, drawing attention or starting conversations.

My favourite thing about the Internet is that I can join in in a variety of ways, one of which is as a passive participant. Those kinds of users are important - they are the majority of most user bases and and they help keep the website going just like everyone else does. I think the idea of a hierarchical system when you earn access to arbitrarily locked areas by being forced to engage in ways you’re not comfortable with is unfair and elitist. Being told that I can either contribute or leave is alienating because I am not a commenter - this is not the only forum I’m active on but my participation here is very similar to on other sites. It’s the same in ‘real’ life also - I’m not the loud one, I’m not a fan of being the centre of attention and I just want to quietly sit among folks with similar interests and just be... there.

I also happen to be a writer, I love reading stories, which was one of the main things that attracted me to places like this. Were I to have access to the stories section, I might even end up being a contributor there, but I don’t want to be forced to do something that makes me feel uncomfortable so that people with a bit of power will feel that I’ve now earned admission to their club.

I really do hope that the mods here change his rule - it seems to be a majority of vocal commenters that agree that it should be changed, so perhaps we could at least get a dialogue going with them regarding their decision and our feelings. It’s nice to feel listened to and not ignored.

Polonius, I do agree with you that many people do not actively contribute to places that they have accounts. I have a facebook account which I am not very active on. I do occasionally post to it. I have an Instagram account which I am not active on. I have a Youtube account were I lurk, but do not post.

I do not complain on those accounts about not being able to access everything from everyone. Some people on Flicker have decided to keep some of their pictures private. That is their choice. Some pictures can be viewed but not downloaded.

My feelings about the rules here are simple, they are what the owner has decided they should be. If you don't want to contribute, that is your choice. I made the choice to contribute so that I could get access to the stories. I also decided that I could contribute to the story section in my own way. I am not a writer, that is not something that I am good at. What I can do is help other members to gain access to stories and improve their own collection of stories. I have had help from other members here to add to my own collection. I have also provided members here with stories for their collections. All that I have asked of them is to contribute to the group.

By commenting your feelings you have just made a contribution to this group. If we all contribute positively to the group, it will only get better. If you have any stories to contribute, please do that. Stories can be very short and still be worth sharing. As long as the story content is within the rules for the forum, they will be welcomed here. I have some stories that do not meet the rules for posting here, in my collection, that have been sent to me by members here. Those stories are available to people who have made contributions to this group.

My rules for access to my archived stories are simple. Contribute. If I don't like something that has been sent to me, I don't add it to my archive. I will send stories to anyone who has contributed to the group in a meaningful positive way. There are a few people who I do think should be given special consideration for access to the story section, but only if they are making a meaningful addition to the forum.

It is quite interesting that this debate has popped up again, and the differing viewpoints being taken. Like Sparky, I've been here long enough now to have had access to teh stories section for years (although not without Marty wanting to see a copy of my passport the first time I asked - naturally I declined!)

We are quite fortunate, in a way, that the forum has an English-speaking section, as it is set up from and based in Germany, where rules are generally much stricter than they are in the UK, and certainly so than in the US. That has a certain bearing on posts in a number of aspects, just simply because what is considered "the norm". As I understand it, Marty is responsible for the content posted here by us. We also have to take a certain degree of common sense into account: whilst there may be members here who are 14 or 15 and want to see pictures of people their own age and not just those who are in their 20s, the reverse is also true - someone in their 50s or 60s may feel very uncomfortable if they click on a link and find its a 13 year old. But I digress....

I used to post here occasionally, but I have "fallen out of love" recently. That's not to say I've stopped writing, not by a long way. It's just that my stories tend to favour my interest - where it's a male patient - and so I've angled my stories to other sites. I should cross-post a few back here, really. I've also been setting up my own Guys With Braces story archive, although sadly Google hasn't picked it up yet. I'm not sure what Marty's opinion on such adverts is, so until I get his permission, you'll have the PM me!

I can see the point in having a little bit of restriction, just to make sure people aren't coming here to suck up the stories and do nothing to the forum. However, I do wonder whether 30 posts is a bit high these days - and whether it in fact puts people off posting, because they see it as an insurmountable task? If there were to be a discussion, I would propose keeping some sort of minimum posting, but dropping it - maybe to 15 or even 10.

When the archive was first mooted I did ask for a number of stories, but I found they were, as I thought they would be, primarily female based and on occasions really not my cup of tea in terms of content, so I haven't asked for any subsequent ones. I am a little concerned though by the slightly condescending attitude that seems to be appearing with regard to people's writing styles and how they choose to write their stories. I appreciate not every one is a perfect typist - myself included - but it really isn't anyone's place other than the author to make changes to stories, or worse still (as was suggested on the German forum a while back) for others to "take over" if a person stops writing.

Finally, it is worth pointing out that for some people, especially newer members, they may not yet be comfortable with their interest. They may not have time to make postings - especially not when people with time on their hands criticize for daring to post something that is "known" because they haven't used the search function. I cannot recall the last time I posted a pic or a video because frankly, I can't be bothered with the laboriousness of it!

- posten.

I did some digging through a site I remembered from years ago and found some of the old everyoneweb.com/braces stories on Geotitles. The actual site is long gone but archive.org worked for some. Here's the links:

Those links do not work as they are because there is one 'anonym.to/' too much :)

Take the 2nd instance out of the link, for example in the first link get rid of the part starting with the / after 20130415095252 and ending with the ?. Remove that segment and it should work.

I don't have:

Amanda's Braces
Braces Fan
Cindy's Story
Melina
Sheila
Ted
The Last Laugh  (I am pretty sure I have this somewhere but I can't find it right now  ??? )
The Study
Tracy

I have the rest of those stories either in The Archive or in my file of stories to check through.

If anyone is able to get access to those stories from the website, please send them to me. I have tried to bring up those stories on the web, but have been unable to. I have tried several different ways, but no luck so far.
