Excerpts from interviews with a Fairy...

Interview #1

"Hello Sparkle, thanks for joining me. Maybe you could start by introducing yourself, and telling us all what you do"

"Well, hello everyone, I'm Sparkle. I'm a fairy who hasn't specialised, so I'm not a tooth fairy, or a castle fairy, or an animal fairy. So I know a little about a lot of different things, and I'll be honest, I usually learn something new about something each day...."

"Now, Sparkle, one thing I can't help but notice is that you have braces - in fact, I know of only one other fairy that has braces. Now, I know it's pretty easy for a human to get braces, they can either get real ones, or we fairies can respond to a wish for them - and I was going to suggest that anyone actually WISHING FOR braces must be a bit strange - then I remembered that your braces aren't for any form of real treatment?"

"Yes, aren't they so nice and sparkly?" she said, smiling widely so the camera could get a good close-up. "I've been attracted to sparkly things ever since I was a baby fairy. Then, when I started doing proper magic for work, we seemed to get a spate of cases that involved braces, so I guess we became the department's 'braces experts'. And it's hard to be around sparkly braces for long without wondering what it would be like to have braces - and I mean metal braces, and not 'fairy wishes' (see earlier stories for explanation). Sooo.... I was working with Santa, and I asked him for a BIG favour, and he gave them to me."

"Yes, I know Santa can give christmas wishes and so on, but I thought they were only for the 12 days of Christmas?"

"You're right, they are, but there is a little-known exemption clause that let me keep them after that! I'll leave it at that, otherwise poor Santa will be overwhelmed with requests!"

<interviewer smiles>

"So, did you go to Fairy University?"

"Yes I did, Magic - who I now work with - and I were there together. Those days were definitely fun - my mum reckoned we were actually studying 'drinking alcohol late in the bar', but talking with younger fairies who are still there, I get a feeling things have changed a bit"

"Changed? In what way?"

"Less drinking. Possibly a bit more work? Or maybe the drinking just got replaced with using social media? Also using a lot more technology. And I hasten to add, I'm not saying technology is bad. I mean, I use technology that I learnt when I was there and since on a daily basis - I'm thinking about our phones, tablets, the FairyNet. But I do sometimes worry that they might be losing out on something"

"What you thinking of?"

"Ok, well recently I've had the pleasure and enjoyment of reading through some VERY old spell books, you know, ornate binding and all that, older than my grandma's grandma's grandma. And yes, you can put all of the content online, but sometimes a previous fairy has underlined something, or written little side notes, that maybe help you run the spell better, or easier, and I've even seen notes about tweaking the spells to do other things, or use them in different ways. Trying to put that into a text document isn't simple. Plus, those books really DO have a lovely feel and smell to them, so much nicer than my tablet!"

"So you think we should revert to using big books of spells?"

"Hell no, absolutely not! I mean, I couldn't work as effectively as I do without the new technology. But on a recent operation, the contents of some old books was actually essential to what we were doing"

"The books contained old braces spells?"

<this time Sparkle laughs>

"I don't think humans even had dentists when those books were written, let alone braces. No, these were simply some powerful mainstream spells, that helped us do our jobs".......

Interview #2

"Hello Jane, thank you for coming to talk to us"

"Oh, that's all right, it's my pleasure"

"So, you play Sparkle in the latest 'Fairy' film: how did that come about, and what made you decide to take the role?"

"Well, I'd just finished working on my previous film, and I got a call from my agent. He said 'Jane, I have something interesting for you here - how would you like to be a fairy?'. I mean, what girl DOESN'T want to be a fairy!"

"Well, yes, indeed. So tell us a bit about the role you play"

"My character is called Sparkle, she works out of one of the fairy offices, with her friend Magic. Like all fairies, Sparkly loves shiny things, and in a previous film, she managed to persuade Santa to give her shiny metal braces - the only fairy to actually have braces. Sparkle is a sort of 'general', not specialised, fairy, and one of the main jobs of fairies is to fulil people's wishes."

"Ok, so what sort of things we talking about here?"

"Mostly mundane stuff I guess. 'I wish I could get home quickly', 'I wish this traffic would clear', 'I wish my arm wasn't hurting so much' and that sort of thing. But quite by chance, Sparkle has worked on several wish cases that involve people, like herself, that like braces, and would either like to try having some, or would like to meet someone with them."

"That sounds a bit strange...."

"Not really. I mean, I see you have an ear piercing... why? I'm guessing you like the way it looks."

"Ah, right. So tell us a bit more about Sparkle"

"Well, fairies don't live anywhere near as long as us humans, but if you were to map their lives into human lives, Sparkle is in her 20's, and is pretty bright: she went to fairy university, which she apparently enjoyed greatly - I suspect more the social side of things. She's actually quite a level-headed fairy, but still likes having a lot of fun. Put it this way, she's not going to turn down an offer of an evening out down the fairy pub!"

"Oh, so fairies have pubs then?"

"Why not. In the last film, the fairy pub floated up in the air above a human pub."

"Pardon?"

"Bear in mind, this IS a fairy story, so pretty much anything goes!"

"So what's the background of the storyline?"

"Well, it's a quiet day in the office, and Sparkle has caught up with all the latest fairy news, so is checking on the human news - she likes reading the 'offbeat' section - and she comes across a new story about two girls who have somehow got braces while they slept. Of course, she realises something is up, and she and Magic go off to investigate. Of course more cases of 'braces while you sleep' happen, and as the name of the film hints, this seems to be the work of some sort of 'Dark Fairy'. Of course, the question is who this 'Dark Fairy' is, and WHY she has started doing such things. I mean, fairies are all supposed to be nice... So, the braces that this dark fairy gives the humans start off pretty simple, you know, just simple 'train-tracks', but by the end the braces she's giving people is pretty nasty - I suspect even the most die-hard braces enthusiast might find them fairly extreme! And just to make things more fun, the fairies are having a lot of problems tidying up after this Dark Fairy, her magic braces seem to be glued on to the victim's teeth pretty well!"

"Changing the subject a little: I see you share the top billing with several others"

"Yes, it's always nice to see a film with so many positive female characters in it. I guess the most impressive character has to be Lilly: in the earlier films, she first met Magic and Sparkle when she was still at school, as a girl doing work-experience. Since then, she has gone to university, and now works in a senior role for what is effectively the Fairy's version of the FBI. But as well as being a top operative, she still also loves to let her hair down, and have a pint of 'elven ale'. Oh, yeah, for some strange reason, she seems to like wearing roller-boots!"

"So, I get the feeling that this has been a role you've enjoyed playing"

"Absolutely. The film doesn't try to take itself too seriously, there's quite a few plot holes, some of the 'fairy science' is dodgy at best, but that doesn't matter. It's more about friendship, and making good from bad!"

"Jane, it has been a pleasure talking to you...."

I have 3 more interviews lined up (one is actually an extended version of Interview #1): they will get posted later this week, as the relevant bits of the main storyline get posted. There's 5 more chapters to go in total!

(I would post you a "teaser", but the first couple of sentences of them all contain spoilers!)

Lilly TV Interview, #4

This takes place shortly after the girls have brought Princess Sebille out of the Old Palace. Clearly word that an FAS team was lurking, followed a bit later by the Queen arriving, had got out.

"Excuse me, Fairy TV News: can you spare us a moment to explain what has been happening". The reporter was rather amused to see Lilly standing there, clearly wearing braces, and double headgear. Not to mention that she looked like a young fairy, all dressed in (now a bit dirty) pink, with roller-skates on her feet.

Whilst Lilly was indeed wearing headgear, and knew she probably looked very geeky, she suppressed those feelings. Lilly stopped and turned to the camera. Now that Princess Sebille was safe, maybe it was time be a little more open about things. Ok, so it wasn't really her place to decide what information should actually be released, but why shouldn't she 'guide things along' a little.

"What would you like me to tell you?"

"Can we start with who you are, please?"

"Sure, my name is Lilly, I work with a certain governmental organisation". She said that last bit in such a way as to imply 'don't push any further about what my job is'.

"And what has been happening here today? Is it related to the recent human 'magic braces cases'?"

"Yes it is, and I can definitely state that there won't be any more problems for humans caused by Princess Sebille". Lilly said it in such a way that it hopefully appeared that she had said the name by accident, but she hadn't: it was completely intentional. She knew that she was possibly overstepping the mark by giving out her name, but she KNEW what the next question would be, and how she would answer it.

"Princess Sebille? So you're telling me that the 'Dark Fairy' was a princess? I've never heard of a Princess Sebille"

"It's a long story, which I hope will soon get told properly. She is a princess from many generations ago, put into a deep sleep to protect her until she was found"

"Protect her?"

"Yes, she was trapped in a dark and unhappy place, which greatly affected her, causing her to carry out some not-very-nice magic. But I'm happy to be able to say that, with a bit of rather special magic, she's now feeling a lot better, and I doubt that she'll be wanting to do any more Dark Magic"

"So what is this place?". Lilly was expecting this question too, and whilst she would loved to have explained its history, she felt that, for the moment, that was NOT a good idea, especially if she wanted to keep her job (which she did!).

"To be honest, we're not really sure yet. What I can tell you is that it is NOT a good place to be right now, and I'm very glad to be out of it. Hopefully we'll learn a bit more that we'll be able to share in the future"

"So do you know where this Princess Sebille will be going now?"

"She is being taken by The Queen to the Royal Palace. But don't worry, some of our best operatives will be there, just in case... although I don't think there will be any problems". Lilly looked at the interviewer, as if to say 'end of interview'.

"Thank you for your time, Lilly" said the fairy reporter.

Interview with a fairy, #3

(this is an extended version of interview #1, but includes many spoilers, which is why it wasn't published earlier!)

So I know a little about a lot of different things, and I'll be honest, I usually learn something new each day...."

<interviewer smiles>

"So, did you go to Fairy University?"

"Changed? In what way?"

"You're referring to your recent work, where a load of humans got given braces by a dark tooth fairy?"

"Yes, that was a challenging and difficult job, but interesting too."

"Tell me more... for example, how did it all start?"

"Well, I was reading the human news, when I saw an article about a couple of humans that 'somehow' got braces while they slept. I mean, let's be honest, that sort of thing doesn't happen without some magic being used, does it? So Magic and I went to see what was happening, and quickly discovered that magic WAS involved. But how? Runesdale, which is where it happened, is a pretty quiet place, and there hadn't been any scheduled magic there for a while. So we started by calling in a couple of Tooth Fairies, who did a great job of removing the braces from the human, a teen girl"

"But that wasn't the end of it, was it?"

"No, it happened again the next night. We got lucky with that one, we were up early, and started scanning for any magic, and we came across the third victim. Unfortunately, good though they were, our two tooth fairies were stumped with how the braces were attached, so we had to call in Flora"

"Oh wow, who DOESN'T know Flora, our most experienced tooth fairy - what she doesn't know about teeth just isn't worth knowing! So she was able to sort your victim out?"

"Yes, it didn't take her long to remove the braces from our third victim, but the later victims were harder: it took Flora, Faylinn and Elida working together to remove them"

"How many victims WERE there then?"

"A total of eight victims, over 7 nights. Every night the braces got more complicated, with changing magic, and took our teeth fairies longer each time to remove them".

"So how did you stop the daily trail of braces then?"

"We were joined by a team of top experts, and they were able to use some cutting edge tech to not only find our braces victims quickly, but eventually they were able to point us to where the Dark Fairy was hiding. Sparkle and I were actually part of the team that went in and 'rescued' the Dark Fairy"

"You use the word 'rescue' there, rather than simply 'apprehend'..."

"Yes, it was decided that, if it was at all possible, she should be apprehended, and magic used to remove her darkness"

"And were you successful?"

"Very much so - why don't you ask her yourself?"

"Sparkle, thank you so much for your story, and as Sparkle just suggested, let's welcome Princess Sebille!"

Interview with Princesses Sebbille and Tatiana, #5

Since the end of the story, Sebby has recovered well, no longer having any 'darkness' troubling her. Along with Tats and Lilly, plus a load of help from Elida down in the Dark Archive, they have researching the history of what happened: the problem is that the Dark Archive is a big place, and there's a LOT of books to read to understand things, so whilst they know most of the story, there's still a few holes that need filling.

However, the young fairies felt VERY strongly that the story should be told to the wider fairy public, and what better way to do that than for two fairy princesses to appear on a primetime Saturday evening interview show, on the 'Fairy One' channel......

------

"Princess Tatiana and Princess Sebille, thank you both SO much for coming to talk with us - we know so little about you, Princess Sebille" started the interviewer.

As a result of Lilly's comments in her earlier interview, plus pressure from Lilly, Tats and Sebby (plus, I suspect, the Queen herself) TPTB had decided that Lilly was right, enough time had passed, and that maybe it WAS time to be honest about the hidden fairy history. The big question was of course, how to tell that history, without there being finger-pointing and accusations of a cover-up.

It was Sebby herself who suggested that maybe SHE should tell the story, especially as it was her desire to hopefully open up the Palace ruins as a place where fairies could learn more about what happened.

Sebby was a little nervous: I mean, when she was originally alive, TV hadn't even been invented. So Tats had offered to go with her for this rather important interview. Tats was in a useful position: everyone just assumed that she was a princess, and did princess things, when in reality, she worked alongside Lilly at FI5.

"Thank you for inviting me."

"The big question that everyone asks is 'who exactly ARE you'?"

"You know, that's a very good question" said Tats, "and one that Princess Sebille WILL explain in a moment. But first, I need to explain a bit of history to you, it's a story that was so shocking that it was actually erased from fairy history. And that's why we're both here, to help explain that story...."

"Ok, do go on..."

"We need to go back in history a long way, about a hundred human years ago, just after their 'Great War' had ended. Back then our National Fairy Palace was in the Runesvale Forest. The town that is there is now called Runesdale, but place names change: the forest was the Runesvale Forest, with a 'v' in the middle. The palace was massive, apparently comparable to, if not bigger than, some of the many Royal Palaces over in Europe. By comparison, the curent palace is quite small, but the old palace was also home to much of the fairy operations and government, which is now housed in different places."

"We used to have another, bigger, palace? I must admit, I've never heard of this"

"You won't have done, so do let me continue the story, and I hope things will start to make a bit more sense. So, from the human's perspective, the Runesvale Forest was 'owned' by two brothers, who decided that they needed to expand their farm. To do that, they hired some very big machines, which they used to destroy a part of the forest, which gave them more land to grow their crops, and expand the farm. What they didn't realise - because it was completely invisible to them - was that a clearing in the middle of the forest was the location of our old Fairy Palace. Whilst Princess Sebille was practicing her magic in the Palace cellars, those human brothers were, completely without knowing, about to destroy the Fairy Palace"

There were audible gasps from the audience.

"But surely the fairies in the palace could see what was happening, and could have done something about it?"

"I must explain that our current understanding of what actually happened is very limited, it comes from a very small number of books that have been hidden away for a LONG time. Yes, the fairies realised what was happening. And maybe with modern magic, they might have stopped the brothers. They tried using all sorts of magic, but the older style of magic simply wasn't a match for the huge machines that the humans were using. So, after trying for a while, the decision was taken to evacuate the Palace. Remember, we are talking about many HUNDREDS of fairies. Whilst many fairies managed to safely escape before the devastation - and managed to magic out a lot of important information - many fairies did NOT escape, and that included Princess Sebille, along with a small number of her friends, all of whom were trapped in the cellars."

"Oh my goodness" said the interviewer, "that sounds absolutely terrible. But.... how DID you survive?" she asked Sebby, who took up the story.

"There were six of us in the cellars. We heard the noise, and went into the - by now rather dusty - corridor to find out what was happening, only to discover we were trapped.  The way upstairs was via some stairs further down the corridor, all of which had collapsed. There was a door that led outside, but that was also completely blocked. We assumed that we would be rescued, and rescued fairly quickly, but that wasn't to be: it seems that there was a LOT of collapsed palace on top of us." explained Sebby.

"The documents we found indicate that the fairies searched the site for days: they were able to retrieve a few useful things, plus found a couple of badly injured fairies. They finally accepted that Sebille and her sister Rose, along with a large number of other fairies, had died that day" added Tats.

"But you hadn't died, you were still trapped in that celler?" said the interviewer.

"Yes, that's right. For the next four days we tried all sorts of things to get out, but Palaces have a lot of protection spells built into the mere fabric of the building - we couldn't do any magic at all outside of our practice room, and the magic we were able to do inside the practice room was very limited. We had no food or water, and were unable to magic up any either. After several days, we were getting weak, and my 5 friends sacrificed themselves in the hope that I could live and be found. We found a spell that we would be able to use, to put me into a deep sleep: the hope was that I would survive long enough to be rescued."

"Of course, over the following years, a new Palace, and fairy offices, were built: the decision was taken to build on several different locations, so that such a catastrophy could never happen again" explained Tats

"It turns out that I would never be rescued: it seems that I slept for about one hundred years: I'm not quite sure why I did finally wake up, but when I did, I had a terrible headache, and I felt angry. VERY angry. It seems that when magical things get destroyed, the good magic just evaporates, leaving a great darkness. And the Palace was FULL of HUGE amounts of magic. I had slept in a very dark and angry palace for a hundred years, a palace angry that the humans had destroyed it. It felt that they should be punished for what they did. And I woke up feeling exactly the same!"

"But weren't you still trapped inside the Palace cellars?"

"That's the strange thing: by the time I woke up, the palace had somehow built an 'escape route' for me, so I was able to get outside. I was able to drink from a tiny nearby stream, plus forrage for some food to eat. My strength slowly returned , and I realised that I needed to go and exact revenge on the humans, for what they had done to me, to my palace, in fact to all of fairy-kind. And I think you all know by now what I did over the next week or so!"

"Yes, there have been a few stories circulating, about you fitting braces to people..."

"And I will admit to have done everything those stories describe, and a bit more they didn't know to include! In fact my first few victims didn't get braces, I just did some nasty things to their teeth... cavities and stuff"

"But surely there weren't braces when you were... well, when you were alive?"

"True! As I ventured further, I discovered the humans had built a new town, and once there, my tooth fairy insticts led me to the dentist, and then to the orthodontist.... and I'm a fast learner! And those metal braces, and the facebows and facemasks that go with the braces... they are so shiny and sparkly... and the young humans didn't seem to like them too much either. It was like a red rag to a bull! At the time, it was such fun to give those humans a mouth full of shiny metal that they would be unable to remove!"

There was a bit of a pause while the interviewer worked out how to pose her next question.

"The story you tell of the fairy Palace being destroyed is a very sad one, but I am very confused, as I susppect everyone in the audience here is: why do we know absolutely NOTHING about this? How can such a major part of fairy history... how do I put this... seem to have never happened? Princess Tatianna, I believe that you might be able to help explain this to us?"

"Yes, I'll try.". Tat's waved a wand, and a very large and old book appeared in her hands: this was the same handwritten book that Lilly had found down in the Dark Archive, that first time she had visited it with her mum. "Almost everything we know comes from this book, it's hand-written, and it was hidden away long ago. Clearly, after the initial shock of what happened, fairykind was, shall we say 'not too happy with the humans', and there was a growing feeling that something should be done to somehow 'punish the evil humans'. Princess Sebille's parents - the then King and Queen - were however very astute: they understood that this had not been an attack by human-kind, but that it was a massive mistake by two brothers. So what could they do? If they did nothing, there was no doubt that there would have been a massive and bloody war with the humans... and to be honest, a war which fairykind could never hope to win. So they hatched a plan for the biggest 'cover-up' ever known by fairy-kind: a small team of elite fairies designed what I can only describe as 'audacious magic': they planned to simply wipe the memory of what had happened from all the fairys' memories".

Tats paused, to let the enormity of what she had just explained sink in.

"So, the plan was carried out, and it worked: according to this book, a tiny handful of fairies were left, who knew what had actually happened. They were highly trusted, and never said a word about what had happened. But a bloody war was indeed averted... and we still live happily alongside the humans."

"That is a shocking story..."

"Isn't it just? But I can understand why they did it - we probably wouldn't be here if they hadn't. But a LONG time has passed since then. Those that carried it out died a long time ago. There has been a LOT of discussion about whether we should even tell the story now, but once Princess Sebille found out the whole story, she was quite insistent that it MUST be told. And with several of us younger fairies who were involved, hinting that we might just leak the story anyway - in spite of what could happen if we did so - the 'powers that be' finally agreed with us." explained Tats.

"So, I guess we'll all be finding out more of the details of what happened, will we?"

"Indeed you will" replied Sebby. "I have decided that it will be my job to find out everything I can about my history - OUR history - and share it. We are in discussion with the Old Palace to let us open the ruined cellars up, and make it a place of memories. We also need to see if there are any more books like this one, that might tell more of the story. It was a very sad day for us fairies, but one that we now need to remember."

Ooooh, you ARE a bit behind in your reading. Since The Dark Fairy, there's been "Elida" (another fairy story, follows on from Dark Fairy) and Serena (a witch story) along with a couple of cross-over chapters ("The big one meets the little one" and "The Story Wanderer") ....

Glad you enjoyed reading it.... and keep on doing your writing too!!
