fixed braces and chewing gum
« on: 17. April 2007, 15:07:47 PM »
I always have got the idea that you must not use chewing gum when waering fixed braces. I think it's because the chewing gum may damage the braces or something similar.

On the other hand there are pictures showing fixed braces wearers using chewing gums. In public you can sometimes watch the same. Is the prohibition to use chewing gum really true or just a fairy tale?

Sugarless Chewgums, like those for after eating to neutralize acids are ok and ven advised by my ortho. Chewed alot of them already, they dont glue on brackets or something. Gums with sugar dont either..

My orthodontist recommends chewing sugar free gum after adjustments.  It helps get rid of any pain.

I dont know about fixed braces but I did make the mistake of trying gum when wearing my usual bite plate.
It stuck solidly to the plate and I couldnt shift it. It was quite a problem as no one else knew I had the plate in and I had to wait till I could be on my own to try to remove it.

I still chew gum occasionally and it's no big deal. Worst case a bit get's stuck in the wires and takes some effort to clean.

My ortho even told me it's no problem, just to use sugar free gum for obvious reasons.

Back when I had braces I was told not to, but remember being offered some by a person with braces. He had one of those long rolls.

When I had braces, I was told not to chew gum but did anyway on several occasions with no difficulty or problems.
