Hey everybody,

I was wondering if you all needed just as long as I did to convince myself to really start orthodontic treatment.

About 3 years. At first I was so embarrassed about the idea of having braces as a young adult and then I need to save the enough money yo afford the treatment

I first considered getting braces in college.. then when i was first in the workforce (making my own money).. but finally pulled the trigger when I was 31 (so 10+ years of deliberation). I don't regret waiting, but also think I could/should have just done it in college.

From the age of 10 or 11, I began to feel my interest for braces stuff but at this time, there was no way for me to become a metallic smile wearer (although a lot of my classmates began to wear braces at this time). Although the teeth of my lower jaw were crooked, those of my upper jaw were quite fine, so I did not really need a treatment.

In France, the treatment is financially supported by social health insurance til the age of 16, so before I was mature enough to start a treatment, so the time was over and I gave up this idea, believing it was for good.

It came back when I was around 18-20, when I discovered there was adult braces wearers and I began to think about it again at this time but still not enough ready and not financially able to start a treatment.

After that, during years, although I thought about the idea of a real treatment, I could not imagine to start a real treatment consider to the cost and the social disavantages.

What it makes me think seriously is when my wife got a new job, the new private health insurance for all the family cover almost the entire cost of a treatment.

So, at age 35, for the first time, I made some appointments with several orthodontists.

Still 2 years after, in 2019, at age 37, I finally took the plunge and started a real fixed braces treatment.

Sorry for the little story but I wanted to show how long and complicated it was for me to convince myself to start a treatment : arround 17 years as an adult wondering if, when and how I could start an orthodontic treatment and wear braces.

This day has finally happened and I am glad of it. I just regret I did not choose metal braces for upper jaw. I hated the yellowing of the elastics of the ceramic braces.

From the first Idea, to really do it, till I got them, I think it was about 1,5 Years (may be two) I started just for fun to make appointments with Orthos for 'Information' and then the wish to have them grew more and more. i started to talkt with people about it and also my dentist liked the Idea, because my tooth situation was quite Narrow.

I had a consultation a week ago, I had the paperwork in front of me with a delivery appointment offered - but I backed out. Unfortunately the bracket system on the display model I was shown was not what I would have received.

Oh, they could been on today.

3 days.
I never really wanted to get braces myself. I was happy enough searching for guys with braces on the internet and being the admirer/supporter/watcher. Then a couple weeks ago I started talking to a guy who is also into braces and he talked me into getting braces, he said I had to have the experience, that I would enjoy having them on, and that it would be a full circle moment for a braces lover. It escalated quickly, from the day I said "ok I think I want that" to having braces installed it was just three days. Now I am a proud 28 yo male braceface.
