I noticed that although people had voted in your poll, no one had responded based on their experiences. My experiences are based on recreational wear rather than active treatment, so you need to remember that my reviews are likely to be more enthusiastic and positive than those of someone who had these devices as part of a real treatment.
Tongue crib - the most challenging. It is almost impossible to avoid a tongue crib lisp. I wore mine every day for nine months and still couldn't beat the lisp. It improved, but it never went away completely. Eating is awkward at first, but you get used to it. My 'rules' allowed me to remove it to eat at home but not when I was outside. I did this to avoid the risk of accidental damage. Even though it was annoying, I loved it, and even though hardly anyone ever said anything about it, people must have been curious about it. It was hard to miss, and even if you couldn't see it, you could hear its effects!
Herbst appliance - no problem on a recreational brace as it doesn't restrict jaw movement to the same extent as an actual device. It is very present but not as visible as the tongue crib. However, in combination with the tongue crib and acrylic passive expanders, it was quite a mouthful.
Headgear - When I first tried cervical headgear, I was worried that it would be so uncomfortable that it would change my attitude to braces in general. However, headgear is surprisingly comfortable for recreational use and doesn't make lisping worse. Best of all, it is impossible to hide...worst of all, it is impossible to hide. I've only worn headgear outside on a few occasions, usually when driving. I once visited a coffee drive-through with it on, but it was dusk, and even though I had to lean out the window to tap my payment card, I don't think the server noticed.
