My wife has had fake braces since 2011, a year before we married. She wears them both privately and in public, though since we've moved to the downtown area of a major city, public wear has been more difficult (the community of people who actually live, rather than just work, downtown is quite small). But for several years we had a designated "braces bar," an out-of-the-way place where we'd go to shoot pool, watch games, etc. She'd always wear her fakes there, and everyone assumed she had real braces. We just kept secret the fact that we went to that bar, never mentioning it to friends or patrons of other bars. We never had a problem.
I also insist she bring her fakes whenever we travel. So for example, we just went back east for a relative's wedding, and she brought her fakes to wear when she and I were alone. Cruising along the Connecticut shoreline in my father's BMW convertible with a pretty blonde with braces next to me was a lot of fun! But she didn't remove her fakes when she ran into a store to buy an iced tea. She's very confident with her fakes in, and doesn't care what others think. If we go to San Diego or Boston or Chicago whatever, she'll always bring them and wear them a lot, since the chance of detection is non-existent.
The only near-miss we've ever had was at a local professional baseball game. She was wearing her fakes, as she often does at games, and a friend-of-a-friend we knew slightly happened to be sitting in the same section. When the game ended and he was leaving, he stopped to chat with us. I did all the talking while my wife pretended to rifle through her purse "looking for something." After a couple of minutes the man left and we breathed a sigh of relief!
I didn't buy her fakes from the Braces Shop here. Rather, I bought them from a now-defunct competitor of the Shop. They're pretty simple metal braces attached to an Essix-type clear tray, and I'm satisfied with simple braces. They're quite convincing. She's talked to many dozens of people with them in, and no one has ever seemed to remotely suspect they're not real. I eventually learned to make my own fakes, though I can't craft anything anywhere near as elaborate as much of the stuff in the Shop.
My wife has made me literally dozens of videos wearing her fakes braces. We even did an epic 12-part video that followed her fictional orthodontic treatment that included elastics, power chains, and two types of headgear. THAT was a fun experience, and I still watch the video often.
