I agree with Cassandra. In the end, orthodontists are in business to make money like everyone else. If they want your money, they'll find a reason to put you in braces, and I suspect that's even more true for a new practice that's still trying to get new patients.
Some of it may depend on what you say, though. My wife's regular dentist - an honest family dentist she's been seeing for two decades - told her she was silly when she asked him about possibly getting braces. The first ortho she consulted, when she only said she wanted braces to straighten her teeth a little, recommended top braces only for a year. At the next two consults, however, she mentioned she wanted to fix her bite (a mild crossbite on one side). Those two both recommended braces top and bottom plus elastics for 18-24 months. Obviously we'll go with one of the latter.
