When the braces come off...

I was wondering how members deal with when their partner's braces are removed.
My fiancée is due to get her braces (upper and lower metal and ceramic self-ligating braces - in-ovation brackets, white with a large metal clip on each bracket) off in a few weeks time  :-[
She knows that I love her metal smile but she is obviously looking forward to getting the braces off after 2 and a half years and enjoying her new smile.
I'm sure I'll love her new smile too, though I can't help this feeling of dread of losing my braced babe.
She will be getting retainers, hopefully hawley (nice) but possibly essix (meh)
Basically, I don't want to look disappointed with something she'll be so happy with and I want to support her.

How have other members coped with the debracing day?

You can't possibly show any disappointment. This is a great moment for your fiancee and she is much more important to you than her braces. Try to share the pleasure in her dazzling new smile.

Hawley retainers (? for life at night?) would be  a continuing pleasure for you.Even if your fiancee's  ortho gives her essix retainers as part of her treatment plan , they will no doubt be happy to provide hawleys in addition if she pays extra, so why not offer to pay for the hawleys as a de-bracing  gift -for both her and you?

I'm going to love her new smile, she'll be happy and her confidence a turn on.
The date has been moved forward however, she came home today with a lot of rubber bands! I'm so looking forward to her last 6 weeks in braces, the rubber bands are amazing.
She knows how I feel about her braces (drunken conversation last week....) so is really playing up and flirting with the rubber bands :)

Ha, between moving to a rural area, saving for a house deposit, her lack of organisation and covid it hasn't happened yet!

It's neat that the notorious moment of "getting the braces off!" takes on a uniquely negative light to folks such as ourselves. I can recall feeling very disappointed when friends got them off over the years, and it felt strange to force myself to be happy for/with them.  I think it'd be a relatively common sentiment for members of the forum. While I personally have at least another year to go on top of a surgery yet to happen with my braces, I have no doubt I'll be profusely fighting the blues when they break the news to me. There're always fakes but I have to imagine it won't be as wonderful as the real thing. There's a kind of warmth and excitement that comes with the authenticity of the experience. To KNOW that you have braces and revel in that. I certainly don't take them for granted!

How has her attitude been about keeping them on this many years after (seeming) so close to getting them off? You mentioned her knowing how you feel about them; has that had an impact on how she's been with them on this long?

The few weeks she was quoted at that appointment was quite wrong if I remember correctly! She had a handful of appointments after that, up to mid 2016. She got brackets put on her last molars around then - they hadn't had brackets on before and flared out. The ortho seemed to struggle with that.

My love of her braces has definitely impacted her decision (and indecision) to keep them as long as she has. That said, she can be pretty disorganised and until recently there wasn't an ortho within a reasonable distance (neither of us drive), she has no trouble with them and has excellent dental hygiene so it's been at the bottom of her to do list!
