Would you wear braces forever?
« on: 11. September 2024, 18:58:31 PM »
If you could wear real metal braces forever, would you?

Let’s say hypothetically there would be no medical damage to your teeth and no additional risk of cavity or decay. You also have to have appointments every 4 weeks and you still feel the soreness from tightening and adjustment. If you decide to wear braces, they are permanently attached to your teeth for the rest of your life and you can’t change your mind and take them off ever.

Reality wise (not just fantasy) could you do it?

I am relatively close to getting braces again, with 54 years of age.
We‘re just waiting for an answer from my insurance, to schedule the glueday.
Currently, before they are in, I would love to wear them forever.
I definitely will ask the orthodontist to keep them on, as long as possible.
also for retention.
In my teens I already had to deal with brackets and for some time also with
headgear. The hate in the beginning ended up in some kind of love for all of it
and I also had some „tears in my eyes“ even being happy to get them to off.

Now they should stay forever - al least for as long as possible in any way.
Let’s see, what the experience will make out of this idea over the months.

This would be awful. Brutal. In real life, no. In fantasy, no. It was good while my treatment lasted, but I was glad to get rid of them.

Interesting answers!

I myself have real metal braces and am loving it. It has been a couple of years now and I am thinking if I had the choice to keep them on forever, would I do it? I think I would. I am such a sucker for braces  :-X my obsession with them has not died down at all. Actually, I think every day I get more and more turned on by my braces!

Interesting question.

I have to answer it in my usual way - would I wear them myself? Absolutely not. But could I see myself enforcing it on someone else? Very tempting.

It would have to be 'deserving' though: someone with an attitude problem, for example, or the sports jock... Not just any old person I happened to find.

I’ve had my braces for 2 years now. I’m so used to them and they’ve become a part of me that having them forever wouldn’t be the end of the world. I notice the tightness of them, but that’s about all. I certainly wouldn’t want something like headgear forever though.

I’ve had mine so so so long - largely unintentionally - that I basically have had them forever
I wouldn’t want this to go forever and my orthodontist will be removing them relatively soon but I can’t say I’ve regretted it

I would say: If there would be such an opportunity, I would not hesitate a single second: Yes I would.

I certainly wouldn’t want something like headgear forever though.

Here, I would say yes as well. Permanent headgear? Where do I have to sign?

SPOILER ALERT:  Hate to shatter the dream

Nah, you do not shatter our hope and dreams. After all, we DO know that wearing braces for an extended period of time isn't the best thing you can do to your teeth.

That is why, the thread-starter proposed
Let’s say hypothetically there would be no medical damage to your teeth and no additional risk of cavity or decay.

Ah, this old chestnut...

The lawsuit was withdrawn a just under a year later for being "frivolous". It transpired that said patient had regularly missed appointments, including a 10 month gap at one point, and had been checked with no issues 6 months before removal. It seems the "problems" only occurred after braces had been removed!
