Anyone ever had just upper braces?
« on: 23. March 2016, 04:12:07 AM »
Hi, new here. My daughter (13) and I have our first consult Thursday. I promised her she wouldn't have to go through braces alone and I Finally can afford to pay for mine now. (Im 47yrs old). I really don't care about the lower set but have a feeling the Orthodontist will say both. Ive heard of patients opting for just upper or lower but have questions.  Just curious. Thanks in advance.

Hey there,

that's not so easy I think. I had only upper for the beginning of the treatment, but got the lower some weeks later. Your will need to ask your orthodontist if that is possible as if you change your upper teeth they most probably won't fit to the lower ones any more. That may lead to a malocclusion that can even damage your teeth. (That is what I was told 20 years ago when I asked the same question.)

Good luck to both of you!

Dominik

I agree that having a brace on only one arch may cause problems with your bite, but I  had a brace on my upper teeth only and it did not worsen my bite.

Having said that, if I were starting again, I would probably get braces on both arches and do the job thoroughly.

You need to take your orthodontist's advice

Thanks guys. Ill see what the Ortho  says tomorrow.  It may be that the way my jaws are the upper  only won't  have an effect but i guess they know best. I appreciate  the posts though. Wish us luck  ;D

My treatment starts with only upper because of my deep bite. Few weeks or months later I will get also lower. Most of the time they place it on both sides. Like other people said before.

In my childhood, my orthodontic treatment started with a banded space retainer, after one of my teeth had to be removed after an infection.
After a year or so, when the band fell off, I was told that I will need braces anyway and that they will start treatment with fixed braces. And so I got my first set of braces installed only on the upper arch.

Same here.  When I had braces, I got them on only my lower teeth at first.  I got braces on my upper teeth a few months later.  That wasn't at all unusual at the time.

An friend of mine got braces on only her lower teeth about 20 years ago.  She actually needed braces on her upper teeth as well, and that's what her orthodontist wanted to do, but she only wanted her lower teeth straightened.

As for the original question, I've seen a few people with braces only on their upper teeth, but not many.  Maybe it was early on in their treatment and the lower braces were soon to follow ??

My cousin and one of my friends back at school when we were kids only ever had upper fixed braces. I guess in some cases it might be sufficient or it might be a compromise cost-wise?

If one set of teeth is fairly straight, I would think that the orthodontist could align the other set to match them. I don't think that they would be in ideal alignment, but they could be matched up to each other. When an orthodontist does both top and bottom, both sets of teeth are moved to what is considered best alignment.

I had only uppers for about 10 months, then they added lowers. In my case the lowers weren’t that crooked, bot I needed braces on both arches to align my midline.

I've only ever seen people just get upper braces during like "phase one" when they're young, usually a full set comes during phase 2.
