Well, I know I haven’t updated my journey in a long time but here it goes…
Since my last post I have adjusted even more to it, speech has greatly improved, but still not perfect, I think it won’t improve much more but I do not really care now. People say that they do notice my lisp a little bit but barely and that it is me that notices it a lot more than them, probably, lol.
Yes, it is a little uncomfortable but it kinda needs to be to help you it is a constant reminder to you to put your tongue in the correct position which it does more and more on its own
The only issue I have now is that when I am really distracted or really concentrated on something my tongue sticks out under the crib and rests between my lips, that has ben the hardest part to control, which me may try to help with a new crib when braces are placed, we are talking different options and designs with my ortho, more on that later.
Then about a month and a half ago my tongue crib broke I had t go in as an emergency because it was hurting my palate really bad, the ortho wasn’t in so another dentist just cut it but left the bands in. A few days later I came back for new impressions for the new crib. My ortho said it might take 2 weeks to get because the lab was backed up and low on supplies.
At first, I said yeah freedom… I had a different lisp the first 3 days but then it went away, and I was talking normally. Then I noticed that my tongue was sometimes doing what it needs to do and staying in the right position but not all the time I had to move myself. However at night was a different story and my tongue pushed on my teeth as usual when asleep, within a week there was movement and my bite opened a little, the gap between top and bottom teeth could not be seen anymore with the crib but within a week an tiny one appeared.
Then I realized myself that I actually missed my tongue crib and wanted it back ASAP and bugged my ortho for them to push the lab and hurry. Fast forward a week I go in happy and eager to get it back but… the lab missed the instructions and it was a tiny one that would not work at all for me and my habit. So, one more week to wait, The day comes and it looks better and according to the instructions however once fit in it was awful I couldn’t speak it was all awkward, like too far back and angled weirdly, so off it goes again to the lab. I couldn’t believe myself thinking and wanting to have it back soon.
Finally, I get it on again, I had to get used to it again, but it was a lot faster than the first time.
However, it was not perfect, like the first one, asymmetric, and sit kinda funny, looking from the front the left side is longer than the right and feels kinda crooked. I spoke to my ortho and tells me it is ok, and it is doing its job. But I feel it and I have to wear it, lol. It doesn’t affect at all how it works, and it is doing its job. She told me to give it some time and then if I feel I want a new one we can talk about it.
After the break, of the crib and from the crib (no pun intended), my ortho talked to me and said now after this she really wanted me to keep it on for the full time of my treatment, there was a possibility of have it off after a year. I understand her concern and honestly I don’t care anymore, I will enjoy my tongue crib and the process, honestly it doesn’t bother my anymore, I feel confident I go it un public I don’t really care.
One last thing is that as I said I might get a one tongue crib and we have been talking with my ortho about it, and if I decide to get a new one we have been talking about improvements to help me even more.
- the first option is making it longer but bend back the lower part, creating like a spoon to help me hold my tongue inside and not under the crib as I explained happens sometimes.
- Second option is getting 2 smaller tongue cribs upper and lower so if my tongue goes out it will be a lot more uncomfortable to stay out
- third option add spikes to lower teeth behind, with the crib always I am not getting off that easy, lol
We are trying to schedule braces for the first weeks of July and then I will make the decision if I keep this tongue crib or get anew one, anyhow I can always get a new one if I feel like it.
Sorry for the long rant
