I remember them well. But the braces have been fake.

And there have been some other girls with other braces like one that was a body brace. That one was fake too.

For sure the quality has changed from the point of technology.

I doubt it has changed from the point of phantasy or let us say content.

The changes may be similar to the development in other areas, for example the quality of cars has changed a lot, but the pleasure do drive has been huge at the old days as well.... :)
