What type of retainer is best?
« on: 26. June 2020, 04:34:14 AM »
I’m getting my braces off soon and I am getting a bonded wire retainer for my bottom teeth but I can choose my top retainer, which one is the best?

definitely hawley wire retainers,,, they hold much longer and they are adjustable in case you dont wear them for some reason enough,,, so slight corrections can be done with them easily,,,,,versus clear retainers will just not fit anymore if teeth have slightly shifted,,,,

I would go with standard hawley retainers, provided you can be good about wearing them.  At one point, I had a bonded retainer on my lower teeth and did not like the feeling on my tongue at all.  Plus flossing is even more difficult than with braces.

What did you go for? Hawley retainers are better in my opinion. They last longe ,and are  harder to break or lose. It’s just the talking with them and how they feel and look that takes a bit of getting used to.

I haven’t worked out how yet! Thought it would be a bit easier!

Why not go for bonded upper retainer as well? You hardly feel them and although cleaning your teeth might be a little harder, it's not impossible.

Well, a upper retainer can also interfere with the tongue. In some malocclusions it cannot be used at all, such as a deep bite. Otherwise you would bite off the upper retainer pretty quickly.
If you place the retainer too close to the gingiva, irritation or increased inflammation can occur.

The best thing to do is to ask your orthodontist if a retainer for the upper jaw is an option for you.

Best regards,
Stefan
