The main character (played by Bryan Larkin, not Tom Cruise) wears a retainer in the flashback to his teens. In one scene he takes it out before asking his girlfriend out to the prom. In another scene he is clearly seen wearing the retainer while he is wrestling. As he gets pinned, he gaps for breath and it become quite visible.
